Grow Food Northampton (GFN) and the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust (NEFOC) are proud to announce that the Mushroom House and farmland in Florence, MA have been successfully leased and are now thriving under new stewardship. What began as a call for farmers to join this project has blossomed into a vibrant example of equity, food sovereignty, and ecological stewardship in action.
Located on the 121-acre Grow Food Northampton Community Farm, the Mushroom House and farm are rooted in a place with a rich agricultural history. Together, NEFOC and GFN sought a farmer who would embody the values of ethical land stewardship, food justice, and community-centered farming. That vision has now come to life: the project has moved from searching for the right steward to supporting an active, community-driven farm operation.
This success demonstrates the power of partnership and commitment to building just and resilient local food systems. With affordable housing and access to land, the Mushroom House & Farm stand as a model for how organizations can work together to create opportunities for BIPOC farmers and advance food sovereignty in the Northeast.
