Reparations Program

  • Co-director: Kenya Lazuli

  • Coordinator: Shingai Njeri Kagunda

The Reparations Program at NEFOC is committed to creating a more just future for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities in Vermont and beyond. We focus on land reparations, building strong relationships with the Abenaki people, and fostering BIPOC solidarity.

Our Work

  • Every Town Project (VT): We're securing permanent land access for BIPOC communities across Vermont. This project recognizes and aims to contribute to the repair of the historical theft of land from the Abenaki people and aims to create safe, welcoming spaces for BIPOC Vermonters.

  • Neighbors Network (VT): This network brings together community members committed to dismantling racism and oppression. Through trainings and gatherings, members build skills and support each other in creating a more equitable Vermont.

  • Land Matching Committee (VT): BIPOC leaders guide the process of matching potential land stewards with donated land. This ensures an equitable and culturally-sensitive approach to land access.

  • Reparations Map: The Northeast Farmers of Color Network calls for reparations to heal the injustices of a food system built on stolen land and labor. We demand land, resources, and financial support to reclaim sovereignty, cultivate healthy food, steward ancestral homelands, and promote reconciliation. Through the Reparations Map, you can directly support BIPOC farm projects. Please respect their privacy and avoid unsolicited contact. We celebrate reparations successes – share your stories with us!

Building a Thriving Community

We're excited to share some of our recent accomplishments:

  • First Land Donation (December 2022): We received our first land donation (Thetford Church), a significant step towards our Every Town Project goals.

  • Media Recognition: We were featured on VT Public Radio, raising awareness of our mission.

  • Liberation Library & Tool Library: We've established a community resource center with books, tools, and other resources for BIPOC Vermonters.

  • Engaging Events: We've hosted a variety of events at the New Suns Community Center, including workshops, skillshares, movie nights, and celebrations. These events foster community connection and learning.
